The “E.Rosa” Archaeological Museum and Art Gallery of Amelia is a must-see for history and art enthusiasts who want to learn more about the ancient city of Amelia and its evolution over the centuries.
Inside the Museum, visitors can follow thematic itineraries that provide an in-depth reconstruction of the various aspects of life in the ancient city. One of the best-known works on display is the bronze statue representing the Roman general Nero Claudius Drusus known as Germanicus, which was found in Amelia in 1963.
The visit to the Archaeological Museum ends with the Art Gallery Section, where locally sourced works of art dating back to the period between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries are collected. Among the most valuable works you can admire the panel of “Sant’Antonio Abate” by Piermatteo d’Amelia, one of the major protagonists of the Umbrian Renaissance together with Pinturicchio and Perugino.
A new section of the museum was recently opened which displays some finds from the very rich Necropolis of the Hellenistic period found in the former Consortium of Via delle Rimembranze in Amelia. This section is an important addition to the Museum’s already extensive collection and allows visitors to discover even more about the ancient city of Ameria and its history.
